Double-Round Square Wreath Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

This double-round square wreath is a calm, modern take on a classic granny square project. Nine solid squares in soft oatmeal are each finished with a charcoal border round, then joined into a ring so the dark edges meet and repeat around the wreath like a hand-drawn outline. It is made for crocheters who are comfortable with double crochet and basic joining, and it comes together quickly in bulky wool. The finished piece is about 12 inches across and 4 inches wide, dense and slightly fuzzy, and it looks just as good hanging on a wall as it does above a mantel.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Bulky weight (category 5) wool yarn. Approximately 200 yards oatmeal (A) and 80 yards charcoal (B). Sample uses Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Bulky (85% wool, 15% mohair, 125 yd/113 g) in Oatmeal and Charcoal.
  • Hook: 6.0 mm (US J-10) crochet hook.
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, blocking mat and rustproof pins.
  • Finished size: Approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) in outer diameter and 4 inches (10 cm) wide.

Abbreviations

  • A: oatmeal yarn
  • B: charcoal yarn
  • beg: beginning
  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase (two stitches worked into the same stitch or space)
  • rnd: round
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sp: space
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Gauge

One square measures 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) after blocking. Work one square and block it before making the rest; if it is larger or smaller, change hook size until it matches.

Tips Before You Start

  • Make one square and block it first. All nine squares must match in size for the ring to sit flat.
  • Keep your double crochets even and not too tight, so the charcoal border round has room to lie flat.
  • Lay the squares out in the 3x3 grid before joining, with every charcoal round facing the outer edge of the ring.
  • Leave generous yarn tails on the oatmeal joins so you can adjust the seams before weaving them in.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Square (make 9)

Set-up: With A, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 3 times, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sps).

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, [dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (28 dc, 4 ch-2 sps).

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 4 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, [dc in next 7 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, dc in next 2 dc, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (44 dc, 4 ch-2 sps). Fasten off A.

Rnd 4: Join B with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp, [dc in each dc across to next ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, dc in each dc across, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (60 dc, 4 ch-2 sps). Fasten off B.

Block each square to 4 x 4 inches.

Joining

Arrange the nine squares in a 3x3 grid with right sides facing up, making sure all B rounds sit on the outer edges. Join the squares with A using whipstitch through the back loops only. Join the first and last squares to close the grid into a ring.

Finishing

Block the wreath lightly. Attach a hanging loop of B at the top center if desired.

Assembly and Finishing

Whipstitch all seams with A through the back loops only, working one seam at a time and checking that the charcoal borders line up as you go. Close the ring by joining the first and last squares. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, splitting the yarn tail and working in two directions so it does not work loose. Mist the wreath lightly, pin it flat on a blocking mat, and let it dry completely before hanging.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the charcoal for deep green or rust for a seasonal version; the double-round outline still reads clearly.
  • Add a small bow or a sprig of dried greenery at the top center, just below the hanging loop.
  • Make a smaller wreath by joining four squares in a 2x2 ring, or a larger one with sixteen squares in a 4x4 ring.
