Honeycomb Brioche Neck-Warmer Poncho Free Knit Pattern

Introduction

This compact shoulder poncho is a cozy, textured layer designed with men in mind, though it suits anyone who likes a clean, unfussy accessory. It is worked in the round as a short, straight tube, so there is no shaping to worry about and no seaming at the end. The brioche honeycomb stitch gives it a deep, interlocking texture that looks impressive but is built from just two repeating rounds. A ribbed neckband keeps it snug at the top, and a narrow dark grey stripe near the lower edge adds a quiet Scandinavian-style contrast. It feels warm and substantial in merino, and it slips easily over a shirt or sweater on a cold morning.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: DK weight (approx. 200–220 m per 100 g), 100% merino wool. Color A (natural undyed): 300 m. Color B (contrast, e.g., dark grey): 20 m.
  • Needles: 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needle, 60 cm long, for the body; 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle, 40 cm long, for the neckband.
  • Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, tape measure, scissors.
  • Finished size: Lower-edge circumference 80 cm; length from neckband to lower edge 30 cm; neckband circumference 50 cm.

  • CO: cast on

Gauge

18 sts and 24 rnds = 10 cm in brioche honeycomb stitch using the 4.0 mm needle, after blocking. Knit a swatch in the round, block it, and measure across the middle of the fabric to check your gauge before you begin.

Tips Before You Start

  • Brioche fabric grows noticeably when blocked, so always measure your gauge after washing and drying the swatch flat.
  • Keep the slipped stitches loose and even; a tight slip will pull the honeycomb texture out of shape.
  • Count your stitches at the end of each round until the pattern feels automatic — a missed yarn over is easy to spot early and hard to fix later.
  • Use a marker at the start of the round and check that the yarn over always sits directly before the slipped stitch.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Neckband

With the 3.5 mm needle and Color A, CO 90 sts. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches, and pm at the start of the round.

Rnds 1–10: [k1, p1] to end (90 sts).

Change to the 4.0 mm needle.

Body

Set-up rnd: *k1, yo, sl1 wyif; rep from * to end (90 sts, 45 pattern repeats).

Rnd 1: *brk1, p1; rep from * to end (90 sts).

Rnd 2: *k1, yo, sl1 wyif; rep from * to end (90 sts).

Rnds 3–134: rep Rnds 1–2 until the piece measures 28 cm from the neckband, ending after Rnd 2 (90 sts).

Edge Stripe

Change to Color B.

Rnd 1: knit to end (90 sts).

Rnd 2: purl to end (90 sts).

Change to Color A.

Rnd 3: knit to end (90 sts).

Next rnd: BO loosely knitwise (90 sts bound off).

Assembly and Finishing

There is no seaming — the poncho is worked entirely in the round. Weave in all ends on the wrong side, running each tail through a few stitches in its own color so it blends in. Block the piece to the finished measurements: soak it in cool water, press gently in a towel, and lay it flat, easing the lower edge to an 80 cm circumference and the length to 30 cm. Let it dry completely before wearing.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • For a wider, more dramatic drape, add one or two more repeats of Rnds 1–2 before the edge stripe.
  • Swap the contrast stripe for a second neutral such as charcoal or oatmeal, or work two stripe rounds for a bolder band.
  • Try a sport-weight yarn on the same needles for a lighter version — check gauge first, as the circumference will change.
