Granny Square Donut Pet Bed Free Crochet Pattern

Introduction

This cozy donut-shaped pet bed is the perfect project for anyone who has always wanted to try granny squares but never knew what to make with them. It is designed for beginners and for medium-sized dogs who love to curl up in something soft, and the plush chenille yarn makes it feel like a cloud under their paws. The bed is built from a strip of classic three-round granny squares in three calming ocean blues, joined into a ring and set on a flat circular base to create that snuggly donut shape. With its clean lines and muted palette, it fits right into a calm, Japandi-style home while giving your pet a warm, cushioned spot to nap.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Super bulky (weight 6) chenille plush yarn, 100% polyester, in 3 colors: Color A (light blue) 400 yards, Color B (medium blue) 300 yards, Color C (dark blue) 200 yards
  • Hook: 8.0 mm (US L-11)
  • Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, blocking mats and pins
  • Finished size: Approx. 24" (61 cm) outer diameter, 12" (30 cm) inner diameter, 4" (10 cm) height

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain: make a loop of yarn and pull it through the loop on your hook.
  • sl st – slip stitch: insert hook, yarn over, pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.
  • sc – single crochet: insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • dc – double crochet: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops.
  • sp – space: the gap made by a chain or chains in the previous row.
  • st(s) – stitch(es).
  • rep – repeat.

Gauge

1 granny square = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) after blocking. Make one square first and measure it; if it is larger than 4", go down a hook size, and if it is smaller, go up a hook size.

Tips Before You Start

  • Chenille yarn sheds and can be slippery, so keep your tension relaxed and avoid pulling tight joins—loose, even stitches keep the bed soft and the squares the right size.
  • Work all 18 squares first and block them to exactly 4" before joining; consistent square sizes are what make the ring sit flat.
  • When joining the strip into a ring, lay it flat on the floor first to make sure it is not twisted before you slip stitch the first and last squares together.
  • Use stitch markers at the start of each base round so you never lose your place in the long double crochet rounds.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Granny Square (make 18: 6 each in colors A, B, and C)

R1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sps).

R2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ch 1, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (24 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps).

R3: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ch 1, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (36 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 ch-1 sps).

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Joining the Squares

Arrange the 18 squares in a strip alternating colors A, B, C, A, B, C, and so on, with right sides facing. Join the squares end-to-end using sl st through both loops of corresponding stitches, working along one edge of each square to form a long strip (18 squares joined). Join the first and last squares to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

Edging

With color C, join yarn at any point on the top edge of the ring.

R1: Ch 1, sc evenly around top edge, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Assembly and Finishing

With right sides facing, pin the base to the bottom edge of the square ring, aligning the outer edge of the base with the inner edge of the ring. Sew the base to the ring using mattress stitch or sl st, working through both layers. Turn the piece right side out. Weave in all remaining ends securely, working them into the wrong side of the fabric so they do not show. Block the finished bed lightly by misting it and shaping it into a round donut, then let it dry fully before your pet uses it.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Swap the ocean blues for a single color or a soft neutral palette for a more minimal look.
  • Add a second round of sc in color C around the top edge for a thicker, more defined rim.
  • For a larger dog, add one more round to each granny square and extend the base by a few rounds, keeping the increase pattern the same.
